たっぷりと雪が降った冬が明けると、豊富な雪解け水が田畑に流れ込み豊作になる。日本の人々にとって、雪は恵みの象徴であり、おめでたい冬の風物とされてきました。冬の文様として室町時代から描かれてきましたが、現代では涼感を得られると夏に用いられることも少なくありません。

Snow, seen as an auspicious winter element, has been depicted in patterns since the Muromachi period. In contemporary times, these patterns are not limited to winter and are also used to evoke a sense of coolness during the summer.

6弁の丸い花のように雪の結晶を表現した文様です。モチーフになっているのは、春が近づき、植物に積もった雪が溶けまだらになった「斑雪」。大きな 6つのくぼみの中に、季節の草花などを描いたものも見ることができます。
