形状が鶏のとさかに似ていることからこう名付けられた、夏から秋にかけて赤や黄色の小さな花をたくさんつける植物。描かれた文様の大きさにより、大鶏頭、中鶏頭、小鶏頭と区別して呼ばれることもあります。

Named for its resemblance to a rooster's comb, this plant produces an abundance of small red and yellow flowers from summer through autumn. Depending on the size of the depicted pattern, it may be distinguished as "Oukeitou" (large cockscomb), "Chukeitou" (medium cockscomb), or "Kokeitou" (small cockscomb).
