蘭花文と呼ばれることもあり、松・竹・梅と組み合わせて「四友」、竹・梅・菊と組み合わせて「四君子」と称される文様です。中国産の蘭が描かれることが一般的でしたが、現在は胡蝶蘭やカトレアなどの洋蘭が用いられることもあります。

Originally, the pattern depicted Chinese orchids, but nowadays, it may also feature Western orchids like Phalaenopsis and Cattleya.
